The Three Different Kinds of Stress and how Chiropractic Care can help!

Increased stress is, unfortunately, a common component of modern life but it is something we often tend to completely ignore. We are all used to being under stress, so much so that it may feel quite difficult to relax.

While stress is common, it certainly isn’t healthy. Stress can do a great deal of damage to your body in a variety of ways, especially over a prolonged period. So, let’s explore the three main types of stress and how chiropractic care can help.

Mental Stress

This type of stress is created because of our own thoughts. Have you ever worried over something so much so that you feel physically ill? I guess we know the answer to that one!!

Mental stress can affect your body in so many ways, including causing headaches, neck pain, and upper and lower back pain. An excessive amount of stress can even cause problems with many of your internal systems such as the respiratory system. It certainly isn’t healthy to be in a constant state of “fight or flight”. Indeed, one of the difficult things about dealing with mental stress is that it is very hard to learn how to prevent the events occurring around you from causing you stress.

Physical Stress

This type of stress is often the result of some sort of injury. For example, maybe you were lifting boxes and twisted the wrong way, or maybe you were playing sports and got injured. Unnatural or repetitive movement puts forces on the spine that it isn’t designed to handle and eventually we feel conscious pain.

Chemical Stress

Have you ever had to deal with food poisoning? It’s rather unpleasant if it happens, but it’s a great way to understand chemical stress. Basically, when your body, especially your stomach, becomes unbalanced due to some sort of toxification, signals are sent to your brain relaying that your body is dealing with a chemical stress. An unbalanced diet, eating processed food, not enough fruit, and vegetables, drinking too much alcohol as well as smoking or partaking in the use of recreational drugs will all cause the internal mechanisms to perform in a dysfunctional manner.

Chiropractors and Stress

There are many things that chiropractic care can do to help someone who is dealing with mental, physical, or chemical stress. If you are dealing with physical or mental stress, a chiropractic adjustment can help alleviate any pain that you may be feeling while also helping to restore proper function to the body by repairing any joint restrictions that may have occurred while your body was dealing with stress.

At Chris Ross Chiropractic, we understand that dealing with stress can be debilitating, so many of the techniques that we use may help to both directly and indirectly lower your body’s stress level.
